Richmond,
British Columbia – April 24, 2007
Canadian
Forest Products Ltd. (Canfor) and Pinnacle Pellet Inc. (Pinnacle)
have announced the successful completion of their wood pellet
production facility located adjacent to the Canfor’s sawmill in
Houston, BC. The wood pellet plant – one of the largest in the world
– is part of a larger project that includes the installation of a
new bark-fired energy system at the Houston sawmill.
The
combination of the pellet plant and the energy system supports the
growing movement from fossil to renewable fuels by providing an
economically viable, value-added alternative to the existing burner
currently operating at the sawmill. This project has been under
development for the past three years by a partnership between
Canfor, Pinnacle, and the Moricetown First Nation.
Construction was commenced in the second quarter of 2006 with wood
pellet production began in the fourth quarter. The energy
system will be commissioned in the second quarter of 2007. This
timeline will ensure the closure of the existing burner by the
regulated phase out date. Cogent Industrial Technologies Ltd.
(Cogent) successfully provided the complete industrial control and
automation services for the entire project.
Cogent’s proven project execution methodology
and technology implementation ensured a turn-key system
integration.
“
The Cogent project team’s expertise and
professionalism was excellent. They engineered a solid
solution that was delivered on schedule” said Leroy
Reitsma, Business Development Manager with Canfor.
“
Our employees picked up on the
operation of the plant very quickly thanks to the excellent job that
was done by Cogent on the Human Machine Interface” he
added.
Pinnacle has already had COGENT involved in
improving the performance at their other plants.
Brock Martin,
Pinnacle’s Operations Manager says: “We were so impressed with Cogent’s
performance on our new Houston plant that we chose COGENT to execute
our Williams Lake plant upgrade project as
well”.
There are also plans to further increase production at the
Houston facility.
